On Saturday, 30 runners — and a few dogs! — turned out for the annual Polar Bear Run in Unalaska. It was a surprisingly mild day for this year’s 5K race down Summer Bay Road, with clear skies, little wind and temperatures in the low 30s.

The Unalaska Raiders basketball teams recently returned from their longest trip of the year, playing five games in five days. Teams competed in the Ninilchik Invitational Tournament followed by games against Unalakaleet and Lumen Christi.

Runners with the Unalaska Raiders boys’ and girls’ cross country teams qualified for the state championships earlier this month. Six students competed at the event in Palmer against more than 160 other runners in the Division 3 races.

This year’s Iditarod Champion visited Unalaska on Friday. Ryan Redington was a guest lecturer aboard the cruise ship Silver Wind, along with musher Sarah Keefer. They sat down with KUCB’s Carlos Tayag to talk about the iconic sled dog race that his own grandfather co-founded fifty years ago.

The Unalaska Raider Basketball teams hosted the Cordova Wolverines this past weekend with the teams each squaring off twice at Unalaska City School. Senior night was held on Friday and ten seniors were honored in total.In the first match-up the lady Raiders finished with a 53-43 victory. Senior Reena Bucaneg led all scorers with 20 points including a couple three pointers. Freshman Izabella Lopez and Senior Marina Jones each chipped in 10 points as well. In the second contest, the Lady Raiders completed the weekend sweep of the Lady Wolverines with a 42-26 victory. Bucaneg and Lopez led all scorers with 13 while Jones again added 10. Senior Karina Villamor also added 7.

The UCSD basketball program Coaches Russell and Spetz sponsored the 2022 Raider 3v3 Basketball Tournament as a fundraiser for Raider Basketball at UCSD. The tournament took place last month.

While they came close to qualifying, the Unalaska girls volleyball team won’t be heading to the state tournament this year. They finished up their season at Lumen Christi High School in Anchorage last weekend, after coming in third place against five other teams at regionals.

Unalaska’s high school wrestling team competed at the Bethel Scramble earlier this month. It was a two-day tournament with a total of 16 schools and over 190 wrestlers in attendance.Because the COVID-19 pandemic halted close-contact sports, it was also the first time in roughly two years that the island’s wrestling team had traveled to compete.

Unalaska High School’s cross country team traveled to Anchorage to compete in the state tournament earlier this month.Nine UCSD runners competed in the five kilometer race, which took place on a muddy course at Bartlett High School.

Unalaska’s swim team had planned to host its first and only home swim meet of the season last Saturday, but, unfortunately, high winds kept their Valdez competitors from flying in.The UCSD student athletes weren’t discouraged though and showed up ready to compete, accompanied on the sidelines by loud cheers from school staff, teachers, parents and friends.
