Job Openings

KUCB is looking for a creative, adventurous reporter to join the westernmost NPR station in the country.

This is a dream job, for the right journalist. You’ll cover big and diverse stories: in one month, you might interview Senator Lisa Murkowski, write a science story about the bottom of the Bering Sea, and then hop onto a crab boat for a feature. With a good amount of city council and bake sale stories sprinkled in, of course. There are countless opportunities to take a lead role in covering one of the most fascinating places on earth.

KUCB has launched many careers. Our reporters have gone on to work at NPR, ProPublica, Alaska Public Media, the Center for Investigative Reporting, the New York Times, and public radio stations all around the country, including WNYC, WBUR, New Hampshire Public Radio and many more. This is a great opportunity to get experience covering a wide range of topics, formats and roles. Reporters here have the opportunities and responsibilities it can take years to earn in larger markets. You’ll get the chance to wear many hats, and work a variety of beats.

About the region:

Our award-winning newsroom is located in the Aleutian Islands, the ancestral home of the Unangax̂ people, who have lived in this region for more than 9,000 years. This is a news-rich region that’s surrounded by some of the most productive fishing grounds in the country, and in the middle of an international shipping corridor. You will be one of a handful of journalists based in this thousand-mile region.

About the station:

KUCB is a public radio and television station in Unalaska, Alaska. We are owned and operated by Unalaska Community Broadcasting, a non-profit formed in 1984. We are committed to local news while providing regional coverage of the Aleutian Chain and Pribilof Islands. Our radio signal serves a community of about 5,000 people. Our stories, however, have a much broader reach with national and international significance.

About the job:

KUCB’s news reporters research, write, and produce news and feature stories; host radio news broadcasts; and prepare stories for online distribution. Special skills include the ability to work collaboratively with a small team, complete work on deadline with minimal supervision, and interact with the public in a professional manner.

The ideal candidate has journalism experience, strong interpersonal skills, and familiarity with audio production. Having said that, we are open to training the right person who doesn’t necessarily have a ton of newsroom experience.

There’s some flexibility in our work, and we are excited to see what you have to offer. We encourage you to apply if you have some of the following to offer the department:

  • Experience working in a newsroom or similar workplace
  • Experience building relationships with historically underrepresented communities and approaching reporting with an equity lens
  • Strong writing skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across an organization
  • Enthusiasm for local news
  • Willingness to learn new equipment, skills and workflows and the desire to constantly improve your craft
  • Ability to speak and/or write in more than one language

  • Host radio newscasts
  • Produce well-written, thoughtful news stories for web and broadcast
  • Record and edit audio for daily broadcast using field and studio recording equipment
  • Seek out diverse sources for news stories, striving to put voices and perspectives on the air that our audience has never heard from or would not hear from otherwise
