The Unalaska Fire Department extinguished a fire in an Ounalashka Corp. warehouse Monday night, with no injuries to anyone involved. The warehouse on Biorka Drive serves as a storage space for the regional Alaska Native corporation and is also home to Marty’s Sari-Sari Store, a popular Filipino-owned convenience shop.

Developments in the case of a King Cove couple who died earlier this year point to homicide, according to the death certificate of James Gould, released in early May. He and his wife, Kathryn, died in a house fire in their Anchorage home this winter. The fire is being investigated as arson.

Ben Knowles, who served as a firefighter in Minnesota before joining the Unalaska Fire Department in 2018, was promoted to the head role on June 1. Knowles has held several leadership positions with the department, and has been recognized with statewide awards for both service and leadership.

Malepeai Mamea’s family launched an online fundraiser about five days ago. As of Tuesday morning, more than 75 donors had contributed. The family’s goal is to raise $10,000 to help transport Malepeai Mamea’s body to Seattle and lay her to rest there.
