The Unalaska School Board voted to adopt the school district's Smart Start 2020 Plan at its meeting Wednesday night.

The district will submit the plan to the state on August 7, and according to Unalaska City School District Superintendent John Conwell, officials with the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) said they are hoping to return the plan with feedback within 24 hours.

The Unalaska City School District plans to move forward with reopening its schools for the upcoming academic year.

The district plans to open under the state's Smart Start 2020 framework on August 19. The first three days will be a soft opening, "where just a third of the students will come each of the first three days," said Superintendent John Conwell at a special school board meeting on Wednesday.

While hundreds of friends and family members usually gather in the large gym at Unalaska City School in anticipation for the seniors to begin their ceremonial walk down the aisle for graduation, this year's UCSD event looked far different.

The Unalaska City School District got creative with graduation this year, in order to make a festive day while following social distancing requirements.  Diplomas were given out to students in groups of five, followed by a caravan of seniors, and finally a virtual graduation event on Channel 8.  You can watch the program here:

For high school students across the globe, end of year events like graduation and prom are looking almost unrecognizable from previous years. With social distancing mandates—due to the coronavirus pandemic—prohibiting groups from gathering, schools can't legally host dances or events.

But for Unalaska High School, that red tape won't be stopping students from celebrating. This Saturday, May 2, high school students will have the chance to attend Vrom, or virtual prom.
