Four decades in, God’s Closet continues to supply everyday items to Unalaska

God's Closet serves as a resource for Unalaskans to find clothing and household items that community members donated.

The thrift establishment, currently based at Unalaska Christian Fellowship Church, began in the 1980s at the Jesse Lee Home, a former Methodist orphanage and boarding school. Today, volunteers continue the mission by distributing donated items locally, statewide and internationally, with island workers often gathering clothing to include in care packages for their families overseas.

In this episode of “Island Interviews,” KUCB's Sofia Stuart-Rasi spoke with God's Closet Manager Deb Rhodes and Elder Marty Diaz about the history of the mission and what the current clothing needs are, like receiving winter clothing even during the summer.

Mrs. Lee Ann Tadeo provided a Tagalog translation during the interview.

Sofia was born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She’s reported around the U.S. for local public radio stations, NPR and National Native News. Sofia has a Master of Arts in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism from the University of Montana, a graduate certificate in Documentary Studies from the Salt Institute and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder. In between her studies, Sofia was a ski bum in Telluride, Colorado for a few years.
