Unalaska has received its second shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine, and clinic staff have already started giving out shots.

The 300 doses from drug company Moderna touched down Wednesday afternoon on an ACE Cargo flight from Anchorage.

Clinic staff began giving shots Thursday, local health officials said.

The Russian Orthodox Church observes Christmas on Jan. 7. The day marks the first of three days of celebrations. To commemorate the holiday this year, KUCB took a look back at archival recordings of past starring ceremonies and talked to several locals about the meaning of the religious and cultural celebration.

The archival audio used for this special program was provided by Julia Dushkin and was digitized by KUCB.

The first doses of COVID-19 vaccine have landed in Unalaska.

The doses manufactured by drug company Moderna touched down around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on a Ravn Alaska flight from Anchorage; they were rushed immediately to the island's clinic, and within a few hours, the first Unalaskans had received their shots.

Alaska Earthquake Center

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake hit about 25 miles east of Nikolski Tuesday morning, and was felt by residents in Nikolski, Unalaska, and Akutan. The earthquake hit just before 7:30 a.m.

It was a "reasonable size tectonic earthquake," according to Dave Schneider, a geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory. He said Aleutian Island residents can expect to feel some aftershocks.

"This is a pretty typical tectonic earthquake for the region," he said. "It's on a very seismically active part of the Aleutian arc, and there's nothing that jumps out as being unusual."

Unalaska's clinic will soon have two different types of "rapid" COVID-19 testing devices — the Abbott IDNow system and the Cepheid GeneXpert IV-2 Molecular system.

Two systems may seem redundant. But Melanee Tiura, clinic director of Iliuliuk Family and Health Services (IFHS), said it's important to note there are national shortages for both the testing systems and the testing supplies. By using two different systems, the clinic hopes to be able to source adequate testing supplies to meet community and industry needs.
