The Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska is offering free online college programs to all tribal members through a new educational partnership. Tribal officials are hoping the opportunity will help grow a workforce in Unalaska beyond the fishing industry.

Six candidates will be running for five open seats in Unalaska’s upcoming general municipal election, according to the city. The filing period to declare candidacy in this year’s local election closed Monday.

Faizar Cayron moved to Unalaska in 2013, and graduated from Unalaska High School in 2017, according to Unalaska Fire Chief Ben Knowles. He worked for the water division of the city’s Department of Public Utilities and coached local Native Youth Olympics athletes.

Unalaska is no longer using toxic gasses to purify its drinking water. In late May, the city switched from using chlorine gas to a sodium hypochlorite to treat the island’s drinking water in order to reduce wear and tear on local plumbing. Public Utilities Director Steve Tompkins said the new chemical is much safer and easier on the island’s pipes than chlorine gas.

Local schools won’t be impacted by Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s education budget vetoes in the upcoming school year, according to officials with the Unalaska City School District. In fact, the district is slated to receive more than district officials budgeted for.

According to a recent report from Unalaska’s Department of Public Utilities, some of the island’s drinking water contains traces of the harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. “It's a very low level,” said Steve Tompkins, director of public utilities. “And if we would have tested at the tap — because we usually run all three wells at the same time, and they blend and then they go to the consumer — it would have been below detection.”

At the July 11 city council meeting, City Manager Bil Homka announced Veeder will take on the assistant city manager role. Deputy City Clerk Estkarlen Magdaong will serve as acting city clerk starting Monday, when Veeder also begins in her new role.

This year’s theme was “National Treasure,” and participants incorporated it into their floats. In all, 17 cars, one boat and even a Coast Guard helicopter participated in the festivities.

The City of Unalaska held a community ceremony at Memorial Park during the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force visit to the Aleutian Island. Many spoke at the ceremony, like Unalaska’s Mayor Vince Tutiakoff. He said this recent visit is a historic moment for everyone.
