The Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska’s annual culture camp has a few new classes focusing on environmental science. At this year’s Camp Qungaayux̂, campers are learning about fisheries management and soil contamination, and participating in data collection.

The Unalaska City Council has approved the Qawalangin Tribe’s full funding request for its annual summer culture camp.

In 2019, the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska initiated its Wellness Program through funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country grant aims to strengthen cultural connections that improve health and promote wellness in Indigenous communities across North America. Unangax̂ artist Anfesia “Sweetie” Tutiakoff is the culture and wellness program coordinator at the Qawalangin Tribe, and is using weekly craft nights to address wellness initiatives.

This summer about 50 Unalaska youth returned to Humpy Cove for the island’s annual Qawalangin Tribe culture camp.The coronavirus pandemic canceled last year’s event and jeopardized camp this summer. But camp mentors and coordinators, from Nikolski to Soldotna, arrived just in time to teach local kids about making bentwood hats, harvesting fish and sea mammals and preserving Unangax̂ values.
