Unalaska is America’s fish capital. More seafood is hauled into Dutch Harbor than anywhere in the country, but for residents it’s not easy to find fresh fish unless they catch it themselves.

Scientists have monitored the salmon run at McLees Lake for 17 years.

But now, they’re in danger of losing the weir that helps them count sockeye at one of Unalaska’s most popular spots for subsistence fishing.

"We are at the end of our funding cycle with the Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund," said Biologist Lisa Fox of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. "We don’t know yet if we have funding for that weir this upcoming season."

ADFG Weekly Fishing report, July 6, 2017: Sockeye are showing up off Summer’s Bay and at McLee’s. Counts at the McLee’s lake weir are very slow currently.. Not many other new reports but King and Halibut fishing has still been good by most reports! Crab fishing should be picking up as well and Lingcod season opened on July 1.
