Multicultural celebration brings Unalaska’s diverse community together

Unalaska City School District held its fourth annual Multicultural Day on May 2. Students and community members showcased traditional dances from around the world inside the high school gym.

Event Coordinator Russel Laforteza said six performances featured the diverse cultures within the community: Unalaska Mexican Folklorico, the Iluulum Ax̂anangin, Alaska Bayanihan Cultural Dance Coalition, the Samoan Dance Group of Unalaska and Eagles View Elementary (K-4) and the Trench Coat Rats.

KUCB’s Sofia Stuart-Rasi spoke with Laforteza about Multicultural Day’s origins and highlights from this year’s event.

The full live stream of the dance performances can be found here on KUCB’s Facebook page.
