Military prepares to exhume remains of unidentified soldier that may have died in WWII Aleutian Campaign
Officials with a U.S. Department of Defense agency are preparing to exhume the remains of an unidentified WWII soldier known simply as “X-3” who is buried in the Sitka National Cemetery. They say it could be a man named Eugene Christensen, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Forces who they believe died in a plane crash in the Aleutian Islands Campaign in 1942.

Unalaska sees late but busy start to summer cruise ship season
Unalaska’s summer tourism season began this month with the state ferry M/V Tustumena’s first port call of the year on June 6, kicking off the Aleutian Island’s ferry and cruise ship season.

New young adult novel retells century-old ‘Jungle Book’ story from perspective of Unangax̂ protagonist
The Alaska Native Language Center published a novel on June 1 that adapts a story from Rudyard Kipling’s famous “The Jungle Book.” The story is the only one from Kipling’s collection that takes place outside of India, set in part on a beach in the middle of the Bering Sea, on St. Paul Island.

From Amchitka to Angoon, Unalaska students take Alaska history to nationals
On May 29, the students presented their projects to about a dozen locals at the Unalaska Public Library, where they also took questions from the crowd. Alaska holds its statewide History Day contest entirely online, so the gathering was practice for the in-person judges they’ll soon face.
