The City of Unalaska has dropped its coronavirus risk level to "low" for the first time since the State of Alaska confirmed its first cases of the virus last year.

The city first moved to the medium risk level on March 17 of last year — shortly after Mayor Vince Tutiakoff Sr. declared a local state of emergency — and has bounced back and forth between high and medium risk since then.

Dutch Harbor has been named the nation's top fishing port in terms of volume of seafood landed for the 23rd consecutive year. And the Aleutians East Borough — which includes Akutan, False Pass, Sand Point and King Cove — rose from third to second place.

That's according to an annual report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released earlier this month on the status of U.S. fisheries in 2019.

Local public health mandates — including mask-wearing and self-quarantine after travel — are now "encouraged" instead of "required" in the City of Unalaska.

The City Council unanimously passed the resolution Tuesday night, citing decreases in the number of local coronavirus cases and high vaccination rates.

A group of Bering Sea crabbers say the pandemic has slowed their fishing season, and they want more time to catch their quota before the state shuts down their season next week.

But the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has denied their request for an extension, citing low population numbers and an upcoming mating season.

For the few boats fishing bairdi crab this year, there could be a lot at stake if they don't have time to catch their full quota.

Trident Seafoods' huge processing plant on the remote Aleutian island of Akutan reopened Friday after a nearly month-long COVID-19 closure.

An outbreak at the plant forced the fishing giant to close the facility in late January just as the lucrative winter season was set to kick off. Forty-five percent of Trident's 700-person workforce ultimately tested positive for the virus, company officials said Monday.
