Tustumena repairs pause services to three Aleutian communities
The M/V Tustumena will not be making stops in False Pass, Akutan or Unalaska in May. An Alaska Marine Highway System spokesperson said the state ferry is undergoing a leak repair before its seasonal launch this year.

Akutan becomes fourth community connected to GCI’s Aleutians Fiber Project
The small Aleutian village of Akutan is now connected to GCI’s high-speed fiber internet.Akutan residents now have access to 2.5 gig internet speeds, according to a Tuesday press release from GCI. That’s the fastest internet the Alaska-based telecommunications company currently offers. The company is working to bump that cap up to 10 gigs in the next few years through its Fiber+ network, which is an initiative to continue to provide competitive internet speeds across Alaska.

Report portrays mixed picture of Alaska’s huge seafood industry
A price collapse in 2023 bodes ill for the seafood industry, the report said. Because of inflation, consumer demand dropped, notably in the United States, where it fell below pre-pandemic levels. There was a large amount of 2022 harvested fish leftover as inventory, making wholesalers and retailers less inclined to buy fish in 2023, and the global supply of key species like pink salmon and pollock increased dramatically, notably from Russia but also in Alaska, the report said.
Chignik Bay latest to join GCI's fiber optic broadband internet project
Chignik Bay on the Alaska Peninsula is the latest community to join GCI’s Aleutians fiber optic cable project. The telecommunications company said crews started digging trenches in Chignik Bay around the beginning of April, and GCI expects households to be able to log into broadband internet sometime this summer.

Seybert was perhaps best known in Unalaska for recognizing the amphibious Grumman Goose’s potential for operating along the steep coastlines of the Aleutian Islands, where coastal communities built below mountainous terrain pose particular difficulties for constructing runways.

Former Alaska Village Public Safety Officer arrested in Texas after fleeing child sexual assault charges
Monte LaVelle Chitty, age 62, was arrested on April 5 in a small town in Texas by state police and U.S. Marshals, after attempting to flee child-abuse related charges in the Florida Keys. He was arrested in March and charged with two felonies involving a 15-year-old girl from the Baptist church he was leading in Marathon, Florida. Those include sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation, and a misdemeanor of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.Chitty was also a former Alaska Village Public Safety Officer in the Aleutian region for several years and a pastor in Cold Bay for a short period. He moved to Alaska and began leading the Cold Bay Chapel in 2010.
