Over 100 people came out to tee off in the tundra last weekend in Unalaska's annual golf tournament. The pop-up golf course featured nine holes in scenic Pyramid Valley and took place over the span of two days.
This was the first Unalaska community fundraiser to take place since social distancing practices were mandated in the spring, in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The golf tournament was held entirely outdoors with plenty of space between groups, tee times were also spread out this year, and families and coworkers were encouraged to create teams, in order to observe social distancing.
Using the honor system and score cards turned in at the end of the second day, judges named Damaged Goods the winning team this year, with a score of 56. And in second place, at 79 points, is Aleutian Chiropractic.
This year's Tundra Golf Classic also featured a Closest to the Pin contest, and the winner is Rachael Katz-Reed, for her shot at 13 feet from the pin, at hole one.
Because all of the teams showed such great spirit this year, it was impossible to choose just one winner in the category of Most Spirited. Two teams, however, made an especially spirited impression on the judges, although in contrasting fashions.
Clad in tulle, tie-dye, and tropical flair, the Island Fairies teed off in a flamboyant frenzy. The other winning team took to the tundra in a slightly more melancholy but equally impressive manner. Emo in the Tundra showed up steeped in black eyeliner, spray paint, safety pins, and gloom. The two teams tied for Most Spirited. Team Health and Safety received honorable mention for their banana and bacon costumes.
The annual Tundra Golf Classic is a fundraiser for Unalaska Community Broadcasting, and thanks to our sponsors and donations from participants, the event raised more than $11,000.
