Wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour couldn't stop more than 50 Unalaskans from tearing up the tundra last weekend at KUCB’s annual fundraiser, the Tundra Golf Classic.
At a preliminary count, KUCB had 23 corporate sponsors this year and brought in more than $13,000 from sponsorships, team fees, and skills contests.
In addition to a nine-hole course, the tournament featured a "closest to the pin" competition and a "longest drive with a marshmallow" contest. OptimERA WiFi generously donated more than $1,200 in prizes for the event.
New to the tournament this year was a pop-up restaurant featuring homemade corn dogs, vegetarian chili, and french fries cooked by Carlos Tayag, also known as "The Pirate Chef."
Some golfers played to win, while others focused on their winning style. Several members of Team Incapables donned capes and bright wigs, while Team Margaritaville rocked classic Parrothead attire. A few teams also created custom uniforms for the event, including OptimERA's Team Honeybadgers and Team Ballz Deep.

KUCB extends a big thanks to all sponsors: Alaska Ship Supply, Alyeska Seafoods, BKR Construction Services, Inc., Coastal Transportation, Delta Western, ECI Alaska, Harbor Welding and Diving, HDL Engineering Consultants, Local IUOE 302, Industrial Resources, Kloosterboer,
Special thanks also go to the Pirate Chef and Brenden McEldery for concessions, Karie Wilson and the Unalaska City School District for laminating the tournament's signs, the Ounalashka Corporation for their sponsorship and use of their lands, and Aleutian Aerial for creating crisp, new maps to aid golfers through the vast course.
Winning Teams (Tied): North Pacific Fuel and U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Dutch Harbor, each with a score of 58. Each of the winners received 5GB of OptimERA Wifi.
Closest to the Pin: With a distance of 3 feet, 11 inches, Matt Lightner won a personalized green Carhartt jacket.
Longest Marshmallow Drive: Mike Hanson hit a marshmallow 114 feet, 4 inches and won 20 gigs of OpitmERA WiFi.
Team Spirit Awards (tied): Team Incapables and Team Margaritaville both earned 1GB of OptimERA WiFi for their outfits and enthusiasm.
