Alaska not expecting ash from Kamchatka eruption, for now, though ash cloud has drifted over the Aleutians
Ash could "easily move further across the Aleutians towards Dutch Harbor. It could affect, maybe, Southeast Alaska. We’ll just have to see. It’s still putting out ash," said Hans Schwaiger, a research geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Cold Bay still on bottled drinking water, 10 months after the wells tested high for 'forever chemicals'
About a year ago, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation tested Cold Bay’s water wells for PFAS, and the results came back well above the levels recommended for human consumption. Cold Bay closed the wells for drinking when the test results came back, and the Eastern Aleutian community has relied on state-provided bottled water ever since.

Community Art Show exhibits Aleutian artists’ photography, woodworking, and more
The show features work by nearly 30 artists. Stacy Alvarado, a lead curator, said the diversity of local artists has made for a strong exhibit. "We have so many new artists that are new to our community, and they have new art up, and we have different mediums this year," she said. “So I was really, really excited.”

USAFV will host gathering Saturday; Community Art Show will open Friday, with some proceeds for family of late Charlene Malepeai Mamea
"We know that it’s important for people to be able to get together during difficult times," said USAFV Board Chair Karen Kresh. "We still wanted to offer a way for people to gather and be around their friends and neighbors, especially if they’re feeling sad or lonely right now."

Body of missing Charlene Malepeai Mamea found in Unalaska Lake
Searchers found and recovered the body of Charlene Malepeai Mamea, 34, Tuesday at 4:48 p.m. in the lake on the north side of Broadway Avenue, at the intersection with Dutton Road.
Alert levels lowered for Aleutian volcanoes previously on watch for potential eruption
Earthquake activity has decreased at two western Aleutian volcanoes, reducing the potential for an eruption.Thursday, the Alaska Volcano Observatory lowered the alert levels for remote Tanaga and Takawangha Volcanoes, about 60 miles west of Adak.

In Memoriam: Alan Lee Haskins
Alan Lee Haskins, 56, of Seward, Alaska, passed away on March 7, 2023, after an ongoing battle with heart failure. The Haskins family lived in Unalaska for 15 years, where he was a beloved coach and teacher.
