Unalaska’s elementary school principal has resigned, but district officials won’t say why.

LaVettra Clayton’s last day was Tuesday, according to School Superintendent Robbie Swint Jr.

Clayton was hired as school principal this spring, and was put on paid administrative leave late last month.

Swint wouldn’t say whether Clayton was on administrative leave up until her resignation. He also wouldn’t provide details on why she resigned or why she was put on administrative leave. He said the district does not publicly discuss personnel issues.

The district is in the process of hiring a new principal. Until then, third grade teacher Riley Spetz will be filling in and performing administrative duties.

“If a parent has to call in and wants to speak with the principal, he will be able to address any of their matters,” Swint said. “Also, Mr. Wilson, who is the high school principal and myself, can take on calls and take on any matters at this time until a new principal is hired.”

Swint would not say whether Clayton was offered a buyout or severance pay.

Clayton and the school board’s interim president declined to comment.
