A St. Paul student died at the island's school last week.

The 5th grader collapsed in a classroom during the school day, according to Superintendent Brett Agenbroad of the Pribilof Island School District.

"School employees provided first aid and promptly called emergency responders who provided assistance and emergency transport to a health care facility," said Agenbroad.

The child did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead. While the cause of death is still unknown, the state medical examiner is performing an autopsy.

Meanwhile, Agenbroad says classes at St. Paul's school are  proceeding as normal. However, district officials have set up quiet rooms where students can meet with counselors.

"The tribe has been very active in securing some mental health and grief counselors," said Agenbroad. "They're familiar with the village, and they are well-known within the school community, because they've come up here repeatedly and we've introduced them to the staff and students as being available at the clinic."

Regional residents can also find counseling and mental health resources by calling the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association's Oonalaska Wellness Center at 581-2742 or the St. George Traditional Clinic at 859-2254.
