Unalaska Families Can Register For WIC Next Week

Laura Kraegel/KUCB

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is visiting Unalaska next week to help families register for the federal nutrition initiative.

"We serve pregnant women, new moms, and children up until age 5," said Krista Jordan, a WIC dietitian for the State of Alaska.

Jordan said WIC can provide families with health screenings, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education.

"A lot of times, parents are concerned if they feel their child is underweight or overweight," she said. "Or maybe they're a picky eater. Or parents just aren't sure when to introduce baby food. Those are the kinds of nutrition areas that we like to help guide families through."

Beyond that, Jordan said the program can also offer financial support to low-income families.

"Probably most importantly, we do offer checks or vouchers that can be used at the local grocery stores for healthy food items," she said. "That can really help a family if they're on a tight budget."

Jordan will meet with families in Unalaska from Aug. 1-3 and help them register for the WIC program. To make an appointment, call IliuliukFamily and Health Services.
