While 46 crewmembers were rescued Tuesday after abandoning a sinking ship in the Aleutians, officials say recovery efforts are still underway for the fishing vessel itself.
A salvage ship has been sent to assess the Alaska Juris, which began taking on water Tuesday afternoon near Kiska Island, nearly 700 miles west of Dutch Harbor.
The trawler's condition is unknown, but U.S. Coast Guard officials said the salvage vessel will arrive to inspect it Thursday or Friday, depending on weather.
Coast Guard airplane crews are also waiting for low cloud cover to pass before they fly over the Alaska Juris and assess it from air.
While they wait to develop a salvage plan, officials said the Coast Guard is investigating why the Alaska Juris started to sink, with help from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the ship's owner, the Fishing Company of Alaska.
There have been no reports of environmental impact.
