Unalaska Will Renovate City Dock This Spring

Annie Ropeik

Unalaska's inching closer to construction on a $44 million renovation of the city dock.

At a City Council meeting Tuesday night, PND Engineers announced they're more than halfway done with the designs — and aiming to break ground in the spring of 2017.

PND Vice President Dempsey Thiemen said the two-year project will replace docks three and four as well as realign the entire dock face. The goal is to create more flat, usable space for handling and storing cargo.

"It'll provide high-capacity surface use for loading containers," said Thiemen. "It'll provide utilities such as fuel, water, sewer, and electric. Just provide more cargo operating area."

The first phase of construction will begin in March, when crews demolish two docks and lay new sheet piling. The second phase will finish the project in 2018, after installing new utilities, storm drains, and concrete surfacing.

The dock will remain open during construction.

While the city is still securing funding for the renovation, Thiemen said PND will finish the designs by November and the project will open for contractor bids by the end of the year.
