The Unalaska City Council on Tuesday authorized the city to pursue legal action against a dog owner whose malamutes have attacked multiple dogs and a resident in recent months.

The Unalaska City Council approved all funding requests from local nonprofits at a city council meeting April 23.

The Unalaska City School District is predicting a deficit and is asking the city for nearly $6 million to fund its fiscal year 2025 budget. That’s about half a million dollars more than last year’s ask, and includes the maximum allowable contribution from the city’s general fund. Superintendent Kim Hanisch said at a recent city council meeting that the school is projecting an $8.2 million budget and a significant deficit.

Unalaska City officials were in Juneau March 3-6 for their annual lobby trip, where they presented some of their ongoing priorities to the Alaska Legislature.

A long-anticipated dredging project in Unalaska is expected to commence in September despite a temporary delay in signing the project agreement earlier this week.

The Unalaska City Council voted on March 12 to allow the city to make updates so they can pay competitive wages to certain employees.

Iliuliuk Family and Health Services (IFHS) requested just over a million dollars from the city to supplement emergency care expenses. The $1,047,441.46 request came at a city council meeting Feb. 27. The council ultimately directed the city manager to create a proposal to fund the request.

The City of Unalaska is pulling out of the Makushin Geothermal Project, after the city council on Tuesday rejected the new terms requested by the company building the project.

The Unalaska City Council greenlit a new cellular tower on Standard Oil Hill, despite appeals from some community members.

Unalaska's first new council member in two years took the oath of office in late October, and Alejandro "Bong" Tungul was voted vice mayor.
