Unalaska organizations form partnership to address contaminated lands

The City of Unalaska, the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska and the Ounalashka Corporation have formed a trilateral partnership addressing contaminated areas known as brownfields on Unalaska and Amaknak Islands.

In this episode of “Island Interviews,” KUCB’s Sofia Stuart-Rasi sat down with Jackie Adams, the City of Unalaska's grants coordinator, Dr. Shanoy Anderson, the environmental director with the Qawalangin Tribe, and Donna Van Flein, corporate affairs and grants coordinator for the Ounalashka Corporation.

They discussed what brownfields are, why these organizations are collaborating and the projects planned for this summer, including hazardous materials surveys.

The partnership primarily focuses on identifying and cleaning up Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) in the area, with opportunities for local homeowners to participate in property assessments.

Sofia was born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She’s reported around the U.S. for local public radio stations, NPR and National Native News. Sofia has a Master of Arts in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism from the University of Montana, a graduate certificate in Documentary Studies from the Salt Institute and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder. In between her studies, Sofia was a ski bum in Telluride, Colorado for a few years.
