Meet Jay King: Finalist For Unalaska's Police Chief

Berett Wilber/KUCB

City officials are interviewing a finalist for the position of police chief in Unalaska.

The community has been without a full-time head of the Department of Public Safety since the retirement of Mike Holman in January of 2018. Then Jennifer Shockley served as acting chief for about a year before resigning, which prompted the city to bring back former chief John Lucking on a temporary contract in March of last year.

Major Jay King, from the Montgomery Police Department in Alabama, arrived on the island on Saturday to visit the community and interview in person.

KUCB's Hope McKenney sat down with him to learn about his background and ask why he wants to work in Unalaska.

This program will rebroadcast in its entirety Monday, June 29, at 5 p.m. on KUCB, 89.7 FM.

The city invites Unalaskans to briefly meet Jay King on Monday, June 29, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. Community members must follow protocol including wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing, and limiting the amount of time spent with the candidate.

Hope McKenney is a public radio news director, reporter, producer and host based in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
