The sounds of Unalaska's radio station are remixed in the early 1980s, as the organization transitions from a repeater station to producing original local music content over KIAL AM 1450. In the sixth episode of “Amplifying the Aleutians,” we learn about the exciting transformation and talk to early radio DJs.
You can find archival video footage of “Cruzin’ with Susan,” one of the station's early programs, on Channel 8’s YouTube page.
That tape, along with thousands of others, was digitized thanks to the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. It was filmed in the late 1990s, after the radio studio had moved to a larger space on the ground floor of the Burma Road Chapel. The tiny windowless studio in the third floor attic space was a common theme among early volunteers.
