2 Sand Point Men Charged After Fentanyl Overdoses

Aleutians East Borough

Sand Point police responded to two fentanyl overdoses over the weekend, one resulting in the death of a 26-year-old woman from King Cove.

In a statement, officials said they were dispatched to a residence in Sand Point on Aug. 31, following a report of an unresponsive man who may have overdosed. Police and medics began life-saving efforts and transported the man to the Sand Point clinic. He survived after being medevaced from the community for emergency care.

Then, on Sept. 1,  officials were dispatched to a Trident Seafoods gear shed near the Peter Pan Seafoods plant following another report of an unresponsive woman who may have overdosed. Raylene Kochuten, 26, of King Cove died at the clinic after life-saving efforts failed.

Police arrested two men believed to be involved in the overdoses: Jeremy Krone, 37, and Michael Gundersen, 44, both of Sand Point. They are being held on charges of manslaughter and second-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, both of which are class A felonies.

Police said they believe the two overdoses are related. Both people took blue 30-milligram counterfeit oxycodone hydrochloride pills, which officials said are contaminated with the synthetic opioid Fentanyl.
