A former UniSea employee is facing drug charges for possessing and selling crystal meth in Unalaska.
Angel Alonso, 31, was arrested July 29 at the fish processing plant's galley. Police officers were there on an unrelated disturbance call when they said they noticed the Fresno, California man behaving strangely.
"He voluntarily allowed them to search his person," said Interim Police Chief John Lucking. "On his person, they found what ended up being two ounces of crystal methamphetamine."
Lucking said Alonso admitted that he uses and sells meth and that he was high at the time of his arrest. The drugs confiscated by police have an estimated local street value of about $12,000.
"We're happy that we got it off the street, because it's a significant amount," said Lucking. "A typical dose is about a tenth of a gram, so if you look at it on the dose level, you'd have 500 doses. That's a lot of dope."
Alonso has been charged with one felony count and one misdemeanor count of misconduct involving a controlled substance. He's being held at Unalaska's jail on $10,000 bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 26.
Meanwhile, police are investigating to determine whether others are involved.
They've executed search warrants on Alonso's room and electronic communications, and Lucking said "subsequent charges may be forthcoming." He also said there's no indication the meth was produced locally.
In an email to KUCB, UniSea CEO Tom Enlow thanked the police department for its work on the case.
"UniSea has no comment other than we do not condone illegal drug use or sales, that we have a zero drug policy, and that we very much appreciate the Unalaska police department's efforts in this case and will continue to work closely with UPD," said Enlow.
Police have set up an anonymous tip line at 581-6422 for community members to report suspected drug activity.
