Stabbing Victim Medevacked To Anchorage

A 27-year-old fisherman, Anthony M. Cervantes, has been arrested in a stabbing incident that sent one person to Anchorage for surgery.

Police responded to the F/V Aleutian Sable early Friday morning following reports that a crewmember had been badly injured in a knife attack. He had a deep laceration to his upper abdomen and was medevacked. Deputy Chief Jennifer Shockley says the victim is in stable condition.

A second member of the crew was also injured.

Cervantes was apprehended by police officers less than a quarter mile from the boat.

Shockley doesn’t believe Unalaskans need to be extra concerned about their safety.

“In a fishing community many, many people carry knives routinely," Shockley said. "We have actually historically have had few assaults involving edged weapons.”

This incident is still under investigation.
