Unalaska police have arrested an Atka man for the third time in a week, after community members expressed concerns about "the threat he may pose to the public."
Mark Snigaroff was taken into custody on Thursday for violating conditions of his release, according to Deputy Police Chief Jennifer Shockley.
The 21-year-old has been in and out of jail since last Nov. 11, when he was arrested on two weapons charges — for being intoxicated while in possession of a weapon and for having a loaded firearm in a bar. He was released and arrested again later that day for taking a bottle of alcohol into a bar.
Shockley said the Unalaska Department of Public Safety seized the gun during Snigaroff's first arrest, but there was still cause for concern.
"We received credible information that he may have had access to another weapon after his [second] release from jail," she said.
That information came on top of several phone calls from worried Unalaskans, who reported Snigaroff was behaving erratically.
"We've had a number of complaints from people around the community — several businesses around town, the school, and some other city facilities," she said. "We've definitely seen a heightened level of concern amongst the public about: What's he doing? What might he do?"
Police had no problems when taking Snigaroff into custody Thursday morning at the airport. Shockley said officers found several knives in his possession, but they still don't know whether he obtained another gun.
Police are also unsure how long Snigaroff has been in Unalaska. Shockley said his arrest at the airport doesn't necessarily mean he was trying to leave the island.
Snigaroff is due in court on Nov. 29. Shockley said he has not been charged with a new crime and still faces three misdemeanor charges related to alcohol and weapons.
