Unalaska's boys basketball (14-4) team came up short at state. The Raiders entered the state tournament ranked No. 1.
The boys beat Hooper Bay in the first round, 49-34. That set up a rematch with defending champion Metlakatla. The teams last played in the 2018 championship, when the Chiefs came away with the narrow, 49-45, victory. This game was not as close, with Metlakatla winning, 39-30.
While Unalaska finished the season in third -- after beating Glennallen, 59-54, in the consolation round -- they were the only team that beat eventual state champion Point Hope all season.
Senior Trevor Wilson was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Raider girls (11-10) finished their season ranked sixth. In the first round, they faced eventual state runner-up Nenana, falling 46-31. They pulled off a win in their second game against Wrangell, 49-40, advancing them in the consolation bracket, where they lost to Scammon Bay, 54-45.
While it wasn't the year for Unalaska, two Aleutian teams picked up state championship crowns at the 1A tournament. The King Cove girls continued their dominating run with a commanding 72-34 victory over Tri-Valley. That capped an undefeated season with a state title -- the second ever for the Rookies.
The King Cove boys completed the double play with a come-from-behind 59-54 victory over Nunamiut -- marking the program's first state championship.
