Unalaska's Trevor Wilson Nabs Top Basketball Honors

As the Unalaska Raiders seek their second state basketball championship in three years, they have the best 2A player on their side. Trevor Wilson was named first-team all-state and 2A Player of the Year by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches.

The junior is honored, but doesn’t take full credit for the accolade.

“It’s definitely very humbling to know that that’s what my peers think, but a ton of credit has to go to the people who have helped me along the way: My family, my coach, my teammates," Wilson said. "I couldn’t have got to this point without their help.”

As a freshman, Wilson played alongside Ben Enlow, Unalaska’s last 2A Player of the Year, and the team went on to win the state title. He says Enlow and other upperclassmen on the team helped show him what it means to be a leader.

While this is the second consecutive year Wilson has been named first-team all-state, he’s looking forward to watching underclassmen grow and develop their game.

“There’s a bunch of good players in Unalaska and I’m excited to see how some of the younger player’s blossom and the next few years will definitely be fun to watch,” Wilson said.

Wilson won’t have to wait too long. Senior Matt Faoasau was named third-team all-state. On the girls’ side, sophomores Kayla Villamor and Hailey Wilson were also recognized. Villamor received second-team honors and Wilson third-team.

Thursday both teams will try to advance past the first round of the state tournament.

The fourth-ranked girls face off against Unalakleet at 5 p.m. The teams have not played yet this season, but Unalaska swept the Wolfpack, 2-0, last year. At 8pm, the top-seeded boys take on Hooper Bay who they beat handily (61-30) earlier this season.
