While local organizations have stepped up to help families during the pandemic, Unalaska is about to open its first official food bank; Moderna announced recently that it’s starting trials for a new HIV vaccine based on mRNA, the same technology used in the company’s COVID-19 vaccine; and a new oversight board tasked with revitalizing Alaska’s state-run ferry system met for the first time last Friday.

Born in rural Northern California, Hope started as a reporter and producer at KZYX in Mendocino County. She then worked at Kichwa Hatari — the first Quechua language radio station in the U.S., based in New York — and KQED in San Francisco.
