“Checkup from the Neck up” Episode 3: Child Abuse Prevention

April was Child Abuse Awareness month. In this month’s episode of “Checkup from the Neck Up,” APIA behavioral health clinicians Robert Johnson and Delta Bedard, joined USAFV Executive Director M. Lynn Crane and KUCB’s morning host Ryan Humphrey to discuss ways to keep kids safe and healthy.

If you'd like additional information on the topics discussed in this episode of "Checkup from the Neck Up," M. Lynn Crane provided a list of resources for parents.

Books that the Unalaska Public Library has for loan:

  • Who Has What? All About Girls’ Bodies and Boys’ Bodies by Robie Harris
  • Everybody Has a Body by Molli Jackson Ehlert
  • Don’t Hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like It) by Carrie Finison
  • We Can Say No by Lydia Bowers

Books that USAFV has that parents can borrow or even keep if we have extra copies:

  • Anger is Okay, Violence is Not by Julie K. Federico
  • The Every Body Book by Rachel E Simon
  • A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret M. Holmes

USAFV also offers a variety of journals and other books, including books on periods and talking to kids about sex, and books for postpartum parents.

General Resources for parents:

  • For parents of kids aged zero to five, SPROUT is a great resource that includes an infant learning program, caregiver resources, and other support.  They do come to Unalaska a few times of year, but you can also connect with them online at sproutalaska.org.
  • For kids who happen to have unique challenges, such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or others, the Alaska Autism resource center is a amazing state-funded resource that helps people with autism and families with autistic children to connect with available resources. Find them online here: https://www.alaskaarc.org/
  • Stone Soup Group is a wonderful resource for all parents of children with any disability.
