St. Paul Island transitions to Village Public Safety Officers amid years-long struggle to find stable law enforcement
After nearly two years without a stable police force, the remote Pribilof Island community of St. Paul is welcoming new Village Public Safety Officers. City Manager Philip Zavadil said he thinks the transition from a police force to public safety officers will be a good change for the remote community. “Not only is it a good fit for St. Paul, I think for most of rural Alaska, it's a better fit because we're not big [cities],” Zavadil said. “We have different problems, different ways of resolving those problems, different challenges.”
Unalaskans become first in rural Alaska to get 5G mobile service
Unalaska now has the fastest cell service in rural Alaska. That’s according to telecommunications company GCI, which turned up the high speed service on the island Tuesday, making it the state’s first rural community with a 5G connection.

In Memoriam: Theckla Marie Hamblin
Theckla Marie Hamblin (Bear) was born in Belkofski, Alaska and later moved to Akutan as a child. She lived in Tacoma, WA for most of her adult life but she returned to the Aleutians for her elderly years, which she spent here in Unalaska. Those who knew Hamblin remember her as a very loving, giving and kind person.
