Raider Runners Place Sixth At Palmer Invitational

David Gibson

The Unalaska Raider Cross Country team continues getting stronger each week. They had another great week of racing at the Palmer Invitational last Saturday, September 7th.  This is one of the biggest races in the state where teams across the state see how they stack up against each other.

The Raiders one of two 1A/2A teams placed 6th as a team in a field of 13 teams dominated by the bigger 3A schools. The boys were led by senior Mike Pereat with a season personal record (PR) of 18:04 and a 17th place finish. Junior Blaine Henning wasn’t far behind with a season PR of 18:18 and a 20th place finish. Senior Henry Simmonds was the third finish for the raiders with a season PR of 18:56 and 31st place finish. Freshmen Jonathane Pereat finished fourth for the Raiders in a time of 19:11 and a 39th place finish. Sophomore Herwin Riodil rounded out the scorers for the raiders with a career PR of 19:33 and a 50th place finish. Locally the Raiders hosted another installment of Raiders Run for Fun 5K on Friday afternoon where almost all of the young runners ran season or career PRs. The Raiders will have a much-deserved weekend off of traveling this next week before heading into the home stretch of the season.

The Raiders will travel to the Wasilla Invite on September 21st and then host their regional qualifying race on September 27th before hopefully sending the Raiders off to the first ever Division III state championship on October 5th.

The next installment of Raiders Run for Fun 5k will be on Friday September 13th. The race is open to the public and starts at 4pm at Tutiakoff Field.
