Kelty and Price Will Challenge Marquardt for Unalaska Mayor

Longtime Unalaska Mayor Shirley Marquardt will have some competition this October.

That's because two candidates have filed to run against her in the city's upcoming election: Frank Kelty and Christopher Price.

Price is head of the Environmental Department for the Qawalangin Tribe. Meanwhile, Kelty serves on the City Council, although he held the Mayor's Office for multiple terms starting in 1990s.

Beyond the three-way mayoral race, Kelty has also declared that he's running for a spot on the school board. According to Deputy City Clerk Roxanna Winters, he's the first candidate to enter the competition for three school board seats up in the October election.

The ballot will also include three seats on the City Council.

As of Monday, Councilor Dave Gregory is running for reelection unopposed, while newcomer Kenneth Bezold has announced he'll challenge incumbent Councilor Roger Rowland for Seat C.

Unalaska residents have until August 18 to declare their candidacy at the City Clerk's Office. Voters will go to the polls on October 4.
