The Museum of the Aleutians is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
To mark the occasion, the Unalaska museum is hosting a weeklong open house, culminating in a party this weekend.
"This event is about celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening — looking back at our history and how we got started, how the community has supported us across these two decades, and then where we're going to go in the future," said Dr. Ginny Hatfield, director of the museum.
Starting on Tuesday, Aug. 27, Hatfield said Unalaskans can visit the museum for free all week from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as take free behind-the-scenes tours at 1 p.m.
On Friday at 6 p.m., there will also be a series of public talks on the museum's founding and future, followed by a community barbecue on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., featuring gallery tours, art activities, and live music by the local Shaler Mountain String Band.
