Unalaska’s Municipal Election 2021: preliminary results

All of Unalaska’s candidate races were decided in Tuesday’s Municipal Election.

Daneen Looby won the race for City Council seat D, with about 65% of the vote. Incumbent Alejandro “Bong” Tungul has won City Council seat F, with about 52% of the vote. And with nearly 60% of the vote, incumbent Shari Coleman has won City Council seat G.

For school board seat A, Kerry Mahoney ran unopposed and has won the seat with about 94% of the vote. Also running unopposed, Nicole Bice has won school board seat D, with nearly 78% percent of the vote. And finally, with about 68% of the vote, Danielle Williams has won school board seat E.

Tuesday’s ballot also featured three ballot questions.

The first two questions proposed limiting the city’s ability to issue mandates during an epidemic. So far, it looks like neither of those ballot measures passed, but with 48 absentee and questioned ballots still uncounted, it is mathematically possible for those results to change.

The third question proposed raising Unalaska’s sales tax to offset rising utility costs. Unalaskans voted against the measure with nearly 64% of cast ballots voting “No.”

KUCB will bring you the final results of the 2021 Municipal Election after city officials canvass the absentee and questioned ballots on Friday morning.
