Unalaskans Follow Statewide Voters In Picking Dunleavy, Galvin During Primary Election

Laura Kraegel/KUCB

Unalaskans largely followed statewide voting trends in Tuesday's primary, although local turnout was low.

Island Republicans picked former state senator Mike Dunleavy as their gubernatorial candidate with 40 percent of the vote — and longtime incumbent Don Young as their Congressional candidate with 63 percent.

Meanwhile, voters who took the ballot for the Democratic, Libertarian, and Independence Parties (ADL) tapped former U.S. senator Mark Begich for governor with 82 percent of the vote. They also chose independent Alyse Galvin for the U.S. House of Representatives with 31 percent.

Unalaskans deviated from the majority of Alaska voters in only one race: the Republican contest for lieutenant governor.

While local Republicans favored former state representative Lynn Gattis, the party's nomination went to state senator Kevin Meyer.

The primary brought 215 Unalaskans to the polls, which represents about 11 percent of registered voters.

City Clerk Marjie Veeder said three absentee and seven questioned ballots are still being canvassed by the Alaska Division of Elections.
