Absentee Ballots Will Decide 'Nail-Biter' Races For Mayor And City Council Seat C

Laura Kraegel/KUCB

In Unalaska, the highly contested races for mayor and City Council seat C are still too close to call — even after Tuesday's runoff election.

Mayor Shirley Marquardt and challenger Frank Kelty are in a dead heat, with Kelty leading the incumbent by just one vote.

Meanwhile, Roger Rowland is hanging on to his City Council seat by a slightly larger margin. So far, he's earned 32 votes more than newcomer Jeff Treannie.

"It's definitely a nail-biter," said Treannie. "It's going to come down to 89 voters, and the mayor's race is even closer than mine."

Both races will be decided on Friday, when city officials canvas 89 absentee and questioned ballots.

City Clerk Cat Hazen said the runoff brought more than 600 Unalaskans to the polls, or about 32 percent of registered voters.

The outstanding ballots will be canvassed at City Hall on Friday at 10 a.m.
