Collaborative Iqyax̂ Building Project Kicks Off This Week

Make Access Iqyax Apprenticeships

We are excited to share with you a collaborative project facilitated by Aleutians Pribilof Islands Association, The Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska, and KUCB.

This project is funded by SAMSHA and IHS grant prevention programming within the CHS Youth Services Division at Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association.  The project revolves around the building of an iqyax̂ and a traditional xaayax/banya on Unalaska Island, but is meant to engage all Unangan far and wide, future and present, via the internet and through the recording of a step-by-step instructional video and future supplemental guide materials.

APIA youth activities, such as these, are intended to tie traditional wisdom and contemporary resources to foster healthy communities. Evidence-based activities interwoven with cultural relevant approaches are  valuable resources to promote positive development.  APIA programming seeks ways to encourage youth and young adults to learn new skills and acquire cultural knowledge while integrating intergenerational connections.

The hands-on work will be led by APIA Youth Services Coordinator, Dustin Newman of King Cove Tribe, Marc Daniels of Make Iqyax Apprenticeships, and apprentice builder, Shayla Shaishnikoff, Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska tribal member and Camp Qungaayux Coordinator.

Watch for daily social media updates on KUCB's Facebook page, and project updates during Vic Fisher's Island Interviews program at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Vic spoke with the team today, and his interview is available below:
