KUCB Seeks Community Volunteers Following Cuts To Public Broadcasting

In light of recent state budget cuts, Unalaska Community Broadcasting is looking for volunteers.

Last month, Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed $2.7 million in state funding for public broadcasting.

General Manager Lauren Adams said KUCB Radio and Channel 8 Television are losing about $76,000.

"One cut is not enough to destroy our organization," said Adams. "But I certainly do fear how we will sound and how we will bring Unalaska the local programming that is why people use us and love us. So we're certainly working our way through that."

When full-time staffer Chrissy Roes leaves her post at Channel 8 later this year, Adams said the station won't refill the position. Instead, she is looking to address programming gaps by working with volunteers and part-time employees.

Adams said those gaps could include arts and culture programs, music programs, public service announcements, and other radio spots.

"By losing staff members, it's a huge hit to our ability to both fundraise and provide programming," she said. "If there are people out there who want to volunteer, it sure does help the quality of the radio and the programming that we can provide. If we have more volunteers on the air, we're able to fill more hours of the day with local content and local voices and information about events."

Unalaskans interested in volunteering with KUCB or Channel 8 can call 581-1888 or email lauren@kucb.org.
