Unalaskans 'Putter' Around At Library's Mini Golf Night

Karen Kresh

The Unalaska Public Library's fourth annual Mini Golf Night was last Saturday, July 27.

Around 50 participants played their way through a handcrafted nine-hole course, each hole with its own unique theme dreamt up by library staff, led by Library Assistant AnnaMarie Ammons.

Hole themes varied from Star Wars to superheroes to Halloween, which included a giant spider and a specter hanging from a hat rack.

City Librarian Karen Kresh said she was happy to see people of all ages from all over the community – parents helping their kids line up a shot, couples having fun competing against each other, and coworkers continuing a friendly rivalry, all using the library in a new way.

One pair wandered in to use the wireless internet and stayed to play mini golf. Some competitors were focused and serious, while others just seemed to enjoy pushing the ball around with the clubs. One player wore his "Mini Golf King" button from last year's event.

"You also get to see the library staff in a non-shushing capacity," said Kresh. "One volunteer commented that it's the loudest he's ever heard us talk."

Kresh said many people in town contributed to the success of the event. One volunteer helped to set up the course, while another youth volunteer built LEGO structures for one of the holes. Staff from city maintenance, the Community Center, and the Aquatics Center helped clear out the library in preparation for the event and set up the course. The school loaned several wooden obstacles to make the course even more challenging.

Kresh would like to thank all of these helpers, along with everyone who showed up to support the mini golf event. She would love to hear input from the community about other creative program ideas.
