The winds were calm and the sun was shining for eighty-three runners who ventured out to Front Beach on Saturday, February 23rd for the 2018 Polar Bear 5K Run.
Participants began gathering at 1pm on Front Beach Road, but as time rolled on, more and more athletes rolled in. PCR’s Albert Burnham said it was the nicest weather he had ever seen for the Polar Bear Run, which could have been one of the reasons why there were almost three times the participants compared to last year.
Seasoned athletes, joggers with dogs, walkers with babies and every combination in between took off down Front Beach Road before turning around at the landfill to complete the 5K race. Even Clarence the race’s polar bear mascot ran the 3 mile course!
Waiting at the finish line were crowds of friends and families and finishers who sipped on hot chocolate and enjoyed the festive atmosphere.
Thanks to the Unalaska Parks, Culture and Recreation for sponsoring the event and check out the video from this event on our KUCB Facebook page!
