Monica Henning, candidate for City Council seat G

Hello my name is Monica Henning. In 1990 I came to Dutch Harbor from Montana to work on the Artic Enterprise. I was amazed by the diversity of people from around the world and was excited to learn that I could work without the typical 40 hour per week limit.

I have been part of many thriving business endeavors including owning and managing real estate properties, starting a successful construction company and one of my biggest projects to date- being one of the original owners in the startup and success of The Norwegian Rat Saloon. While I sold my 50% share in 2020 my involvement in the community has continued. For the startup of the construction company I purchased a backhoe and excavator in order to increase productivity and workload as well as obtained a Class A CDL holder and have implemented it to drive for the local ILWU and for several construction projects since.

While my involvement in the community and my businesses have always been valued by myself, my family and being a mother are just as important. I raised and continue to raise 11 children in this unique and remote place. Challenges such as flying and traveling, schooling and providing for a large family are expected, but I pride myself on balancing these aspects along with my work lifestyle and will continue to do so. These qualities, along with many others make me believe that I could bring a lot to the table with my experience in the variety of businesses I’ve owned and the importance I have in family and community traditions.

I believe diversity of this council needs to be represented and with that will come a more positive and prosperous future for the people of this island.
