President Bush is asking Congress to approve his rules for military commissions to try detainees accused of war crimes. He says court-martial rules are not appropriate for what he terms "illegal combatants." Some legal analysts are concerned that the president's rules leave defendants without enough rights.

Congress Investigates Alaska BP Pipeline Leak
The House Energy and Commerce Committee holds a hearing on BP's corrosion problems in Alaska. A leak forced the shutdown of half the Prudhoe Bay oil field. Committee Chairman Joe Barton says evidence indicates the problem was caused by BP's poor maintenance of the pipeline.

Law Professor Beats the Odds in Detainee Case
One man has taken on President Bush's handling of detainees and won. Neal Katyal won the historic case of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld at the Supreme Court. Katyal argued that the court should intervene in the military tribunals set up by the president to try accused war criminals at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Mortgage Rates Retreat as Housing Market Slows
Mortgage rates are on their way back down again, just as the housing market seems to be cooling in many markets around the country. Figures out this week from Freddie Mac show the average rate on a 30-year fixed loan to be 6.4 percent, down from 6.8 percent a month ago.
