  • English professor Natasha Trethewey has been named the 19th U.S. poet laureate. Poetry, she says, is something people can turn to for celebrating joys and mourning losses.
  • Ray Bradbury has died at the age of 91. He wrote such classics as The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451. Futuristic tales from a man who never used a computer, or even drove a car.
  • A lot of people were excited to watch Venus cross the sun Tuesday. In Naples, Fla., a crowd gathered on the beach for the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. But since it was cloudy, everyone trained their eyes on a laptop to watch the sky show streamed live.
  • Wednesday is the deadline in Washington State to get a ban on same-sex marriage onto the fall ballot. The legislature legalized gay marriage earlier this year. One of the biggest proponents of the repeal is the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle. It wants all of its parishes to actively campaign against same-sex marriage, but some are refusing.
