  • Joe Rosenthal, who took the iconic photo of six U.S. servicemen raising the flag over Iwo Jima in World War II, has died in California. He was 94. Rosenthal got his picture at the end of a bloody five-week battle that left 6,800 American troops dead.
  • Hurricane Katrina washed away Lucio Cano's home and the Mexican restaurant he owned in Pass Christian, Miss. After the storm, the entrepreneur opened the first Latin American food store in the Waveland and Bay St. Louis area.
  • A teacher named John Mark Karr says he was responsible for the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey in 1996. Now in Thai custody, Karr is expected to be returned to the U.S. for further investigation. Colorado authorites have been guarded in their comments about Karr's arrest.
  • The Lebanese military begins deploying into south Lebanon to police the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas. But Hezbollah is already there, making a major effort to help refugees return home and repair the damage left by Israeli attacks.
  • The late 1960s were the golden age of Soul music. In studios located in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Memphis, Tenn., legends like Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge and Otis Redding were recording songs that proved timeless. And many of them were made with Dan Penn.
  • The British government says the country's terror-threat level is taking a step down from "critical" to "severe." The slight improvement comes days after more than 20 people were arrested for an alleged terror plot against airlines. London continues to suffer flight cancellations related to the increased security.
  • Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski and other top officials tour the Prudhoe Bay oil pipelines, which have been crippled by corrosion discovered on Sunday. Lost production at Prudhoe Bay, America's largest oilfield, has sent oil prices to record levels.
  • For the first time in over two years, the Federal Reserve did not raise a key interest rate. Although there was some disagreement among the board members, most believed the cooling economy invited a pause.
  • In Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych has returned to power as prime minister. The opposition leader was closely identified with the former Communist regime that was ousted two years ago. Yanukovych will share power with President Viktor Yushchenko, who led Ukraine's Orange Revolution.
  • Impeachment proceedings against the president of Taiwan have begun. Chen Shui-bian was the first opposition leader to win the office after the island began holding presidential elections a decade ago. Taiwan was ruled by founder Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Party up until Chen took office.
