  • U.S. traffic officials who hope to get drivers to slow down may have found something that works: a GPS device that gives drivers a financial incentive not to speed. Some 12,000 Americans die every year in traffic crashes caused by speeding, according to government statistics.

  • Great people do great things, says author Mark Shriver, but they're often not good people. Shriver's new memoir of his father, R. Sargent Shriver, is a loving look at a man he says managed to be both great and good.
  • English professor Natasha Trethewey has been named the 19th U.S. poet laureate. Poetry, she says, is something people can turn to for celebrating joys and mourning losses.
  • Ray Bradbury has died at the age of 91. He wrote such classics as The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451. Futuristic tales from a man who never used a computer, or even drove a car.
  • Wednesday is the deadline in Washington State to get a ban on same-sex marriage onto the fall ballot. The legislature legalized gay marriage earlier this year. One of the biggest proponents of the repeal is the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle. It wants all of its parishes to actively campaign against same-sex marriage, but some are refusing.
  • The Vatican this week strongly criticized a book on sexual ethics by Sister Margaret Farley, a prominent American Catholic theologian. The rebuke from the Vatican comes as leaders of an organization of American nuns are in their own dispute with Rome. John Allen, of the National Catholic Reporter, talks to David Greene about the disputes.
