Unalaskans Tee Off at the 3rd Annual Library Mini Golf Event

Over ninety Unalaskans escaped the blustery weekend weather to tee off at the 3rd annual Unalaska Library Mini Golf Night on Saturday at 7pm.

Participants played their way through a handcrafted nine-hole course, each with it’s own unique theme dreamt up by library assistants Maricela Rodriguez and AnnaMarie Ammons. Hole themes varied from Dr. Seuss to Alice in Wonderland to a rock n’ roll themed hole, complete with inflatable guitar obstacles.

City Librarian Karen Kresh noted that the course has gotten increasingly difficult over the last three years years and called upon volunteer Carlos Tayag to play each hole before the event started to determine course playability.

“Every year I think,  ‘oh no, we have made this course way too challenging,’ and every year at least one person gets a hole-in-one, so shout out to the golfing skills in our community,” Kresh said.

Unalaska City School and Senior Parents loaned the library what Kresh described as the “wickedly difficult wooden contraptions” at the end many of the holes. The setup was originally built for this year's senior night festivities.

According to Kresh, many other organizations in town contributed to the success of the event. Kresh said that staff from City Maintenance, the PCR, and the Aquatic Center all helped set up the numerous books used for the course, as well as assisted in moving several pieces of heavy wooden furniture in the way of game-play.

Kresh would like to thank everyone who showed up to support the mini golf event and is already looking forward to the next year.

“If anyone has suggestions for how to make this event better, or if anyone would like to volunteer to help next year, they are welcome to contact me at the library,” Kresh said. She also wanted to offer up thanks to those “kind souls” who stayed late into the night to put the library back in order for the following day. You can contact the Unalaska Library at 581-5060.

Additionally, if you missed the library's event, make sure to stop by KUCB's Tundra Golf Classic this weekend.  Miniature golf and various skills contests will be available for local golf enthusiasts. Call 581-1888 to sign up for a tee time!
